dr sketchy’s at bonnaroo

June 18, 2010

There are lots of artsy things to do at Bonnaroo. There are small art exhibits, nightly painting sessions, giant canvases you can add to, but what I wanted to try out was a visit to Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.

I am terrible, terrible at figure drawing, but I had so much fun sitting around drawing and laughing.  It goes like this:  a burlesque performer in a zany costume comes out and does three five minute poses.  You sketch her and add whatever suggestions the host offers, then the dancer chooses a winner or two who gets a small prize.  So cute!

Each model has a silly story.  For example, this is “the Carnival Gypsy, who is morning the death of her husband, the Alligator Wrangler, who was killed, tragically, while wrestling a peacock so we could have feathers for our hair”.  And we had to incorporate a zombie into our sketch during this round.  Travis drew her getting her brains eaten and I drew her sitting at the grave of the Alligator Wrangler with his dead zombie hand popping out of the ground!  Travis usually has no interest in art, but I could tell he was having fun!

Did you know you can create your own chapter of Dr. Sketchy’s?  How fun would that be?  I don’t know any burlesque dancers, but I do own a ton of ridiculous costumes!  Maybe I’ll have a Sketchy party for my next birthday!
